Art and Politics Collide at the 12th Istanbul Biennial

One hundred and thirty artists will convene from September 17 to November 13 at the 12th Istanbul Biennial art exhibition, where they’ll explore the complex relationship between art and politics. The 2011 show, named Untitled (12th Istanbul Biennial references the discourse of Cuban-American artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres (1957–1996), whose work—a series of untitled explorations into sexuality, loss, national identity, political and cultural alienation, and gun violence—largely influenced this year’s exhibition. Artists will expose these, and other themes from Gonzalez-Torres’s career, in five group shows and 50 solo presentations. The artists’ names will be announced at the biennial’s opening.
